In 2017 I presented the workflow for scanning photos, slides and negatives with the then top dog Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II in a video. With the same scanner I digitized about 3000 old pictures and negatives. Meanwhile, the popular scanner is no longer available and some people wonder what alternatives there are now. In this article I followed this question and found an equal successor.
Saving memories into the digital age - but in the right way
In autumn 2017, I digitized the old negatives and photos of the family by the box. At that time I chose the CanoScan 9000F Mark II scanner from Canon. This scanner was in my eyes the non-plus-ultra when it comes to saving the valuable family memories in very good quality into the digital age. After all, nobody wants to be satisfied with inferior results and have to repeat digitisation in a few years due to poor quality.
At that time I also made a video which shows the exact scanning process from the inlay of the negatives to the finished image. Because exactly this information was missing to me at that time before the purchase. The video enjoyed great popularity on Youtube and has almost 31,000 views today. Many of the viewers are enthusiastic about the operation of the scanner and the fast workflow. Due to the included templates for the insertion of negatives or film, the whole scanning process is extremely fast and comfortable.
The top dog among the scanners has left us - what alternative is there now?
At the beginning of 2019 several viewers of my videos informed me that the CanoScan 9000F Mark II was no longer available and asked me for an alternative. After some research I had to find out that the popular device is probably no longer produced and the remaining stocks are now traded very expensive. Some dealers called now instead of the 250€ scarcely 600€ for the CanoScan 9000F Mark II. Now I researched which alternatives to the CanoScan 9000F Mark II still existed. So I finally became aware of the Epson Perfection V550.
The Epson Perfection V550 offers the complete same workflow as the CanoScan 9000F Mark II (see video) when it comes to preparing and inserting the scan media. Besides the scan quality, this is my most important criterion, as nothing is more annoying than if the insertion of the media to be scanned takes a long time or is badly implemented in the software. Those who have thousands of photos to digitize are happy about every second saved.
The Epson Perfection V550 doesn't have to hide behind the CanoScan when it comes to the insertion process either. Image quality and resolution are (nearly) equal. Now some people will say that the Canon could scan 9600 dpi and the Epson can only scan 4800 dpi. This is true, but one should also note that probably nobody will scan his photos with 9600 dpi. In my opinion that would be a little too much of a good thing, as the scanning process takes an extremely long time and the scanned files are unnecessarily large. At that time when I was scanning the family archives, I scanned with a maximum of 4800 dpi and even that only for certain photos that were particularly important to me.
Also the Epson Perfection V550 offers a picture improvement incl. dust detection, as does the CanoScan 9000F Mark II. For almost 210€ the Epson Perfection V550 is one third cheaper than the CanoScan 9000F Mark II.
As it was today, I would buy the Epson Perfection V550 for the digitization of my photos and negatives. Thank God I've already done that. Or wait, do I have to digitize the family photos of my wife sometime?
