Migrating from AmazonWS to another Amazon Affiliate plugin for Joomla

Many Joomla installations are using the Amazon Affiliate product plugin AmazonWS by Fiona Coulter and SpiralScript. Sadly, she stopped developing the plugin due to health reasons. With Amazon Product Advertising API (PA-API) version 5.0 just around the corner, many Joomla webmasters are left empty handed, when Amazon shuts down PA-API 4.0 on March 9th 2020. Many users will need an alternative for embedding Amazon products into their Joomla sites. Here are my alternatives.

On 22nd January 2020, Amazon stated in an email, that Product Advertising API 4.0 will shut down on March 9th 2020. From that day on, all plugins using PA API 4.0 won’t be able to connect to Amazon PA services and need to be migrated to PA API 5.0.
Instantly I searched if there was an update available to AmazonWS plugin. While searching for the update, I found the sad message, that the AmazonWS plugin wouldn’t be maintained from now on.

I’ve used Fiona Coulters plugin since three years from now in paid and free editions. I was very sad to hear, that she wouldn’t be able to maintain the plugins due to an illness in the future. Although I don’t know her personally, except for some support cases,, her faith touched me. Maybe it was tocuhing because of her closure-note on her webpage, maybe because she is a web developer just like me. Anyway, first of all I would like to thank her for the work she has put into all her plugins and into the Joomla project itself.

What are the alternatives to AmazonWS?

At the moment I think, there is only one option that is also approved by the Joomla Extension Directory:

Nearly the same functionality with EB Display Amazon Products

I wrote some mails with the guys from extnbkrs to make them aware of the AmazonWS dilemma and asked them a few questions:

Question: Will “EB Display Amazon Products” plugin support PA API 5.0?
Answer: Yes, it is fully compatible with PA API v 5.0.

Question: Dioes “EB Display Amazon Products” support using ASINS and ISBN codes in Joomla shortcodes?
Answer: Yes, it does.
Why? This makes migration from AmazonWS to EB’s solution more easy, as I could just update all my articles with new shortcodes via database script, without having to re-enter every ASIN or ISBN. I’ll post the database update script here when it’s ready.

Internationalization via geni.us link service

If you want to automatically forward the outgoing links to the right international marketplace for the respective website visitor, the geni.us service is highly recommended:

All outgoing Amazon links of a website can be automatically internationalized by geni.us. For this we can embed the official geni.us JS-Script.

The nice thing is that this script automatically adjusts all outbound links (text links, plugin links, etc.). So I don’t need to care about internationalization and topics like Geo-IP in these plugins myself.

T3-Framework: Show link in article as button

The T3 framework comes with the option of displaying a link in a post or article as a button. This tutorial shows you how to display a pretty button instead of a text link.

I assume you are using the “JCE” editor.

In your article, mark the text you want to link to, place a link as usual via the link button of the editor and change to the tab “Advanced” in the detail window.

In the field “classes” enter the following string without quotation marks: “btn btn-primary btn-lg”.

Your link is now displayed as a button in the defined design of the T3 framework, see the following demo buttons:

Show missing Joomla redirects in admin menu

The menu item “Redirections” is missing in the menu “Components” in the backend, although the plugin is activated. Solution of the problem in this article.

Symptom:

Despite an activated redirection plugin, the menu entry “Redirections” is not displayed in the backend menu “Components”.

Workaround:

Call of the redirection manager with direct URL to http://yourdomain.de/administrator/index.php?option=com_redirect works.

Solution:

Change of the menu type in the database from “menu” to “main”.
This can either be done via an administration interface like phpmyadmin or via SQL script (replace “prefix” with your own, actual DB prefix):

UPDATE `prefix_menu` SET `menutype` = ‘main’ WHERE `prefix_menu`.`menutype` = ‘menu’

Background:

I suspect that the problem occurs when parts of a page have been migrated from a version lower than 3.5 or even 2.5. The problem does not occur with complete reinstallations.

Using Recaptcha 2 with Joomspirit Theme Template for JComments

If you want to use the “Joomspirit Theme” for “JComments” in combination with Recaptcha v2, you have to change the template files a little bit. Here is the documentation.

In this blog post I assume that you are already using the version of “JComments” of “exstreme” adapted for Recaptcha v2.
If not, you can download it here and then install it via the Joomla package management via upload:

But if you want to switch to the free “Joomspirit Theme” template from Joomspirit for JComments like I do, you will notice that the recaptcha relevant modifications in this template don’t take effect and that instead of the captcha box you only get a text “recaptcha” displayed.

To fix this, go via FTP to the folder /ROOT/components/com_jcomments/tpl and copy the directory “JoomSpirit_theme” to the new name “JoomSpirit_theme_with_recaptcha”.

In the copied directory search for the file “tpl_form.php” and open it in the editor you trust.

In or near line 130 you will find the following entry:

Now you only have to activate the new version “JoomSpirit_theme_with_recaptcha” of the template under the settings of “JComments” in the tab “Layout”.
The CSS-files of the cloned template can now be customized and the comment form can be beautified.

How to deactivate Google Two-Factor-Authentication in Joomla via database

I’ve been using Googles Two-Factor-Authentification for for Joomla for quite a while. But after restoring my iPhone i noticed, that the backup didn’t include all the configured accounts. I was locked out of my Joomla-accounts without a way to surpass the Google Two-Factor-Authentication.

The following manual describes how to deactivate Two-Factor-Authentication via the database-backend to regain access to the Joomla-backend.

Follow the following steps to enable a user to login into the Joomla-backend without having to enter a two-factor-code.
Please replace prefix ‘#####’ with the prefix used in your Joomla-database. Every Joomla-installation uses an individual prefix.

Log in to the database management tool of your choice (PHPMyAdmin, SQL ManagementStudio eg.)
The table “#####_extensions” contains all the plugins registered in your Joomla-installation. One f them is the plugin for Google’s Two-Factor-Authentication. Open this table.
Search the table “#####_extensions” for the row with the entry “plg_twofactorauth_totp” in the column “name”.
Set the entry of the colum “enabled” from 1 to 0.
The table “#####_users” contains all users. Open this table.
Search the table “#####_users” for the row containing the affected username.
Search for the column “otpKey” in the row of the affected user from step 6. Note that entry for security reasons.
Search for the column “otep” in the row of the affected user from step 6. Note that entry for security reasons.
Delete both entrys from steps 7 and 8 out of the database.
Log in to the Joomla-backend with the affected user without providing a two-factor-code.
