Nikon Z6II freezes completely during video recording

Last week my Nikon Z6II froze twice in one shot during a video shoot. Switching it off and on again didn’t help either, the camera stayed on. I noticed that only the audio level display was still updating sporadically. Only by removing the battery was I able to reset the camera.
When I switched it back on, I noticed that the current recording was not written from the buffer memory to the SD card, which led me to the conclusion that there must be a memory problem.

I had never had such a problem before, but this was the first time I had filmed with higher video quality and 60p.

As a test, I tried another SD card from the same range of the same manufacturer to rule out a defect, but the problem occurred there too.

I ordered the ProGrade Digital 256 GB CFexpress Type B memory card *. This card supports write speeds of up to 1500MB/s and the problem no longer occurred at 60p.

Stable Backup from SD-Card to iPad or external Storage (HDD, SSD) 2021

With FE File Explorer I was finally able to backup my camera SD card to my iPad or a connected SSD while traveling. The standard Apple Files App is unstable and often messes up backup operations with bigger files.

With FE File Explorer you can easily copy files from SD-card to the iPad opr a connected storage device like SSD or HDD. the app can also access SD cards that are read-only. While copying, we always see the progress for every single file. The app supports differential backups, and asks if we want to skip duplicates or rewrite duplicate files.

On a trip we are asked by local authorities and military police to delete the contents of our SD cards – apparently we were filming in a security zone. In this guide we describe how we can still recover the data.

Apparently, the French military does not care if you only photograph cliffs or lighthouses, if you are in a military security zone.

Such situations are of course annoying. In the worst case, not only the photos and videos that were actually taken within the prohibited zone are lost, but also those that were taken days before. At this point at the latest it becomes clear how important backups are also during a trip.

Better to format than erase

If we are asked to delete the data, we recommend that you do not delete the memory card image by image or video by video, but format the memory card completely. This sounds violent at first, but it is more gentle on the fragile existing file system.

When formatting the memory card, only all sectors of the memory card are marked again as “released for new writing”. Nothing is deleted for the time being. It would be different if the files would be overwritten several times with random data in a “secure delete operation”. But we do not assume this.

Do not use the SD card anymore, turn off the camera

No new data should be written to the SD card after formatting or deletion. So this means that we don’t take any more new photos or videos and it is best to switch off the camera completely. Ideally, we remove the memory card from the camera and, if possible, lock it with the write-protect slider on the side of the memory card. This slider remains set during all data recovery steps that follow.

Data recovery of photos and videos

Now we need a software that is figuratively speaking, bold enough to ignore the file system structure of our SD card and still read out the sectors that are actually released for writing. This software scans the individual sectors for useful data and can then restore them on our computer.

What is mostly possible without any problems in case of photos, can become a difficult task in case of videos, as a large 4K video of course spreads over much more contiguous sectors of the storage medium than a single photo. But even for this, there is software that is specially designed for the recovery of videos.

The data recovery software “Recoverit” from Wondershare is ideally suited for the reliable recovery of photos and videos. Starting with version 8.5, this software also offers extended functions for the recovery and repair of video data. This means that if some video data has been damaged despite recovery, the software can repair it to a certain extent.

The operation is actually foolproof: Insert memory card into the computer, start Recoverit, select memory card, run scan.

To be on the safe side, I repeat once again: Make sure that your memory card with the mechanical write protection is secured against changes before you insert it into your PC for recovery. This advice is vital for sucessfully restoring data. It would be fatal if the PC would directly change, initialize or somehow overwrite the card for whatever reason.

The software then displays the recoverable videos and we can click to mark them for recovery. However, this can take quite a while, especially with large memory cards. So you should bring some time and patience.

There are 4 weeks of backpacker holidays on Bali ahead of us. To save weight we travel without Macbook and Co., but with drone and camera equipment.

But what is the most reliable way to back up the files from the SD cards on the way?

Small, lightweight helper for fast data backup

We found our solution to this problem in the WD My Passport Wireless Pro 4TB.

The external hard drive can copy files from SD cards via an integrated SD card reader. All it takes is the touch of a button. In addition, the external hard drive can also accept files via wireless connection, which we simply don’t use ourselves. This is because, in my opinion, no data transfer is as fast and secure as via high-speed USB 3.0 connection or directly via integrated card reader.

With dimensions of 12.6 x 12.6 x 2.4 cm and a weight of 450 gr. it fits well into our travel backpacks. The device is about the size of a Discman, so it doesn’t take up too much space in your luggage.

Backup even in the jungle without electricity

The special thing about this external backup solution is the integrated 6,400 mAh battery, which allows us to copy files to the hard disk for up to 10 hours. This enables us to make backup copies of our drone recordings and photos even after days without power supply, thus creating space on our SD cards again.

The integrated battery is, despite the sufficient runtime, still small enough to be taken on board by any airline without any problems and does not add unnecessary weight to our backpacks in our luggage.

Quick backup of the SD card (with a little practice)

The device has two rectangular buttons. While the first button turns the hard disk on and off, the second button controls the copy process from the SD card. If we press the SD card button long, the contents of the memory card are copied to the hard disk.

Depending on how the hard disk was previously configured, either the complete contents of the SD card will be transferred to a new folder on the hard disk 1-to-1, or alternatively only those files will be copied that have been newly added to the SD card since the last backup. This differential transfer mode sounds good at first, but there are some dangers.

If files are transferred from several SD cards from different devices, the backup logic can get confused and possibly not backup data because a similar file with the same name has already been backed up.

Thus, those who back up their SD card to the hard disk and then format the memory card run the risk that the next backup process will not back up the photos created after formatting, as the numbering of the photos might start from zero again.

For this reason the differential transmission is not acceptable for us. We back up the complete contents of our SD cards to a new folder every day. This way the external disk does not get mixed up with the SD cards from two DSLRs and the video drone.

Due to the use of the 1-to-1 copy mode, we naturally use more memory than actually necessary, which is why it only makes sense for us to use the 4TB variant. In order not to run out of memory too quickly, we delete any duplicates manually from the hard disk via iPhone app.

No matter which way we choose, once the data transfer has been initiated, the four status LEDs on the upper side show the progress of the copy process.

Dust and waterproof – if you put it in a plastic bag

The only drawback of the “WD My Passport Wireless Pro 4TB” is the lack of protection against water and dust, which would be of interest during a backpacking trip in tropical climates. As a workaround, we simply pack the hard disk in a sealable plastic bag, as it is also used for liquids in hand luggage. Problem solved.

Which SD memory card is suitable for the FIMI X8 SE drone?

The SD card used in the FIMI X8 SE drone must be fast enough to record 4K video. In addition, the memory card must not be larger than 64GB. Here I write about my experiences and my recommendation.

The SD card used in the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone must be fast enough to record 4K video. In addition, the memory card must not be larger than 128GB. Here I write about my experiences and a recommendation.

On the DJI pages, a memory card recommendation is hidden in the small print of the technical details:

Nikon D5, D850, D500, Z6 and Z7 get support for CFexpress memory cards

With a press release from 14.02.2019 Nikon quietly and secretly announces a firmware update, with which the cameras D5, D850, D500, Z6 and Z7 can also be operated with CFexpress memory cards.

The slot for XQD cards built into the cameras is identical in construction to that of the CFexpress format. The new supported format gives photographers the possibility to use the much faster CFexpress memory cards compared to the XQD card as soon as the first CFexpress cards will be available in early summer 2019. The new CFexpress format should not be confused with the old Compact Flash cards – they have nothing to do with each other, even if the abbreviation “CF” suggests a similarity.

According to a Sony press release, the CFexpress cards (Amazon Affiliate Link) are characterized by extreme robustness:

insensitive to X-rays

integrated UV protection

I myself did not use the XQD memory card slot of the D500 as a backup slot in the past because the price of the XQD cards was too expensive for me. I don’t have much hope that the new CFexpress cards will be cheaper than the XQD cards. After all, the new CFexpress cards are a bit more expensive than the XQD cards in terms of speed, and the manufacturers will certainly have to pay for that. In addition, the cards will only be available with 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB capacity, the inexpensive 64GB variant should be omitted at least at Sony.

Update January 2020: SanDisk, my favorite SD-Card manufacturer, has published CFexpress cards (Amazon Affiliate Link) with 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB as well. These will be my choice, take a look at them here: San Disk CFexpress cards (Amazon Affiliate Link)

There’s still one small glimmer of hope: Maybe the “old” XQD cards will become cheaper after the launch of the CFexpress cards (Amazon Affiliate Link).

Comparison of speeds

The CFexpress cards (Amazon Affiliate Link) achieve a significantly higher write and read performance than the XQD cards. A comparison with my previously preferred SD card shows the speed advantage particularly clearly. For comparison a fast, “old” Compact Flash card again.
If you don’t want to record 4K videos with 60fps (which the above mentioned cameras can’t do), you probably won’t use the maximum possible write rate of the XQD card or the CFexpress cards (Amazon Affiliate Link).

Restore SD card images reliably with graphical user interface

If you want to restore a previously saved image of an SD card, you can often use various command line tools such as the terminal. Restoration can easily become a pain: The progress of the recovery is not displayed or the recovery is simply unreliable – the SD card in Raspberry Pi still doesn’t want to boot at the end. A new tool for Mac, Windows and Linux with graphical user interface solves the problem: Etcher.

If you use your Raspberry Pi or other single-board computers in not necessarily gentle environments, you know that the file system can suffer unpredictable power fluctuations. Often only a restore of a previously (hopefully) made backup or the repair of the SD card’s file system on a Linux host will help.

However, as I usually have current backups and only rarely use the log data that has been generated in the meantime, I usually use the SD card for this purpose. And that’s a pain in the ass every single time.
The image does not fit to the physical size of the SD card, the image was written unreliably (checksum error) and in the end my Raspberry won’t boot from the card. All over again…

This is over now, because there is a new tool now: Etcher is an open source program for reliable recovery of SD card images with graphical user interface. It not only recovers the SD card from ALL common backup formats (. gz,. zip,. img etc.), it also checks the target card and configures it accordingly and then verifies the written image.

If Etcher says that the image was written successfully, the SD card will work in the target device. You can count on it.
