Insert Peak Design Capture Clip into DJI Ronin RS 2 and RSC 2

I use the Capture Clip carrying system from Peak Design on all my cameras. All my tripod heads are compatible with the Capture Clip. Only for the DJI Ronin RSC 2 I have to change my system every time. I will show you how to use your camera with Peak Design Capture Clip directly into the DJI Ronin RS 2 and RSC 2, without any screws. An alternative quick release plate makes it possible.

All we need is an alternative quick release plate 3061 from SmallRig *. This replaces the standard quick release plate from DJI.

This allows us to switch between the carrying system, the DJI Ronin or tripod entirely without conversion from the Peak Design carrying system.

In this alternative quick release plate, we can insert the capture clip (or in my case, the Ellie PD camera cage with integrated capture clip *) directly into the DJI RSC 2 or RS 2.

Does the L-angle “Ellie (PD)” also fit the Nikon Z6, Z7, Z6II or Z7II?
After all, there is a Z variant of its own with the Zelda bracket. If you are looking for a Peak Design Capture Clip compatible solution, you will find it with the “Ellie PD” bracket.

Compatibility with Nikon Z series cameras

Short and sweet: Yes the „Ellie“ (Amazon Affiliate Link) also fits Nikon Z6, Z7, Z6II and Z7II. Probably it even fits Z5 and Z50. Both the battery flaps and the flaps for the ports on the left side of the camera (MIC, headphones, HDMI, remote shutter, etc.) remain accessible. The rubber flaps can still be opened, closed and tilted to the side when open. No problems at all.

Z6II with Ellie PD and Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8. All bays and ports are clear – everything fits perfectly.

Compatibility with FTZ adapter

The Ellie PD (Amazon Affiliate Link) is not only compatible with the FTZ adapter, it enables the use of an adapter plate on the camera with simultaneous FTZ adapter use.

For example, I myself use a Peak Design Capture Clip System ARCA adapter plate attached to the camera (Amazon affiliate link). When this adapter is screwed to the camera and I put on the FTZ adapter, the FTZ adapter blocks the adapter plate: I can no longer slide the adapter plate into tripod head or support system.

Sure, I could screw the adapter plate directly onto the FTZ adapter, but if I then switch to a Z lens, I would also have to alter the adapter plate again. That is too inflexible for me. I was looking for a way to still have a working adapter plate on the camera itself, despite possibly having the FTZ adapter on. Ellie and Ellie PD brought the solution.

The PD version of the Ellie has the ARCA plate of the Peak Design Capture System (Amazon Affiliate Link) already integrated. On the normal Ellie (without PD) you can screw on any adapter plate. The result is the same.

The Ellie PD increases the distance from the table to the bottom of the FTZ adapter. The FTZ adapter no longer blocks the adapter plate.

In both cases, the oversize of the pure Ellie angle without adapter plate already provides additional distance between the underside of the FTZ adapter and the underside of a mounted adapter plate. As a result, the FTZ adapter no longer blocks insertion into the support system or tripod head.

Finally, I can slide the Z6II back into the carrying system – whether with FTZ adapter or without.

Use adapter plate despite FTZ adapter on Z6, Z7, Z5 and Z50

Those who use the FTZ adapter on the Nikon Z may have difficulties using the camera in the usual carrying systems and tripods. If you still want to quickly attach the camera somewhere when alternately using the FTZ adapter and Z lenses, these tricks provide a way to mount the adapter plate on the camera.

L-bracket or camera cage increase the distance between camera base and FTZ adapter underside

The main problem is that the underside of the FTZ adapter extends beyond the underside of the camera. This means that I may no longer be able to slide an adapter plate mounted on the Z into tripod or carrying system mounts without problems, because the tripod or carrying system collides with the protrusion of the FTZ adapter.

If you now mount a camera cage or an L-bracket under the camera, you artificially extend the camera housing downward. In other words, the distance between the bottom of the camera and the bottom of the FTZ adapter increases and the adapter plate can be inserted as usual.

Example: I use the Capture Clip v3 carrying system from Peak Design (Amazon affiliate link) because it allows me to insert the camera directly from the strap into an Arca-compatible tripod. Unfortunately, that doesn’t work with the FTZ adapter on. So I ordered a camera cage from Smallrig (Amazon affiliate link). Under this I put the adapter plate of the Capture Clip. Problem solved.

If you don’t need a cage that runs completely around the camera, you’ll find a narrower option specifically for Nikon Z6 (II) and Z7 (II) in the form of the “Zelda” L-Bracket from 3 Legged Thing (Amazon Affiliate Link). As I found out in a test, the Ellie (PD) bracket also fits the Z series cameras perfectly.

Using the FTZ Adapter with Peak Design Capture Clip on Nikon Z cameras

Of course, this makes the camera slightly heavier or larger. But that doesn’t make a big difference, and the other advantages of an L-angle or camera cage cannot be denied:

My equipment and basic settings for wedding photography in churches

Of course, there is no magic formula for setting the camera, no matter what kind of photos you want to take. Neither is there any ultimate equipment for such jobs. This is also the case with the photography of weddings in churches. Motives and light conditions vary from shooting to shooting. Nevertheless, I usually move with my equipment in a certain setting range, or try to approach the location, motives and light from a certain value. Here I talk about equipment, camera settings and editing.

My photo equipment for weddings

I use the Nikon D500 with the Sigma 24-70mm F2,8 DG OS HSM Art lens as my main camera. In my opinion, the focal length range is ideal for weddings and the lens is sufficiently fast. It is a full frame lens, of which I only use the middle field of view because of the DX sensor. This has the positive side effect that the images are crisp right into the corners. And in this image field the autofocus also works absolutely perfectly.

As second camera I use the Nikon D7500 with the Sigma 18-35mm F1,8 DC HSM Art lens. The 18-35 is actually my favorite lens. To keep both cameras close at hand and to be able to switch between them quickly and comfortably, I use a storage system with clip-in function. I love the Peak Design Capture Clip V3. Just screw the Capture Clip under the camera, attach the strap to the belt and we are ready to go. The nice thing about it: With the mounted plate, I can insert the cameras into an arca-compatible tripod head at any time without having to screw anything on or off.

My basic settings for wedding photography in churches and similar buildings

As described above, there is no such thing as “the ultimate camera setting for wedding photography”. If you seriously believe this, you should refrain from the thought of working in this field. This means that the following settings only reflect a guideline value that has proven to be useful for me and my equipment in most locations. Adjustments to the values are almost always necessary, but as a starting point these are mostly worth gold.

Preparation is everything

If you have the possibility to enter the location before the actual event, you should familiarize yourself with the exact local conditions in advance and adjust your settings with regard to the available light and possible motifs. Remember that the lighting conditions can change depending on the time of day, the weather and the artificial lighting that can be switched on and off. Preparation is everything.

Depending on your chosen and available equipment there will of course also be deviations, this should be clear.

Basic camera settings for wedding photography in churches

Exposure time: 1/250 (I don’t use longer exposure times for human photography)

Aperture: F 2.8

ISO: 2000

Exposure compensation: +1/3 or +0.3. Images tend to be too dark rather than too bright, hence this manipulation.

Focus priority instead of trigger priority, as blurred images are of no use to me.

Exposure metering: center-weighted metering or rare matrix metering.

Recording format: RAW compressed (NEF for Nikon).

White balance: Automatic white balance. This usually works reliably and saves a lot of work during subsequent image processing. Should errors occur, I can correct them in the post-processing thanks to the RAW image.

Photo development and image processing

Some time ago I switched to the image development software and Lightroom alternative “Luminar” from Skylum. The available subscription options from Adobe for Lightroom and Photoshop were simply too expensive for me. I reported about it in this article.
What I particularly like about “Luminar” is the easy and fast application of image settings to other images. This simply saves time, because I don’t have to edit each image individually, but can “copy” the settings of one image to other images with similar motif placement and similar lighting conditions. This still needs to be fine-tuned, but this is the smallest part of the work.

What works really well is the integrated Accent AI technology, which automatically adjusts images using an AI. In my opinion, the results are not perfect, sometimes even artificial if you exaggerate the intensity of these functions, but they also save a lot of time. A feature I miss in Lightroom.

For later retouching and image manipulation I use the Photoshop alternative “Affinity Photo” by Serif.

Use camera support system and tripod plate at the same time without changing the adapter plate

For a long time I wanted to buy a carrying system for my camera, but one thing I didn’t like at all: I didn’t want to have to screw another adapter plate to the camera every time I changed from tripod to carrying system or vice versa. Now I found a suitable solution without having to screw it on and off. With this solution, you use an adapter plate permanently screwed to the camera for both the mounting in the tripod head and for the carrying system. Time-consuming and annoying retooling is no longer necessary.

Screwing on and unscrewing the adapter plate is annoying

I shoot almost 40% of my photos with a tripod. Especially with HDR and long exposures there is no other way. For this reason, an adapter plate is permanently screwed under my Nikon D500, which allows a quick attachment to the tripod head. Depending on which tripod I use, I either have to change to the adapter plate of my travel tripod or to the one of my heavy Cullmann Magnesite tripod. Already these two variants annoy me. Mounting the different plates takes time, is fiddly in the cold and I simply can’t act fast enough.

Most camera carrying systems come with their own adapter plate, which is used to attach the camera to a strap, belt or strap. That would be the third different adapter plate in my photo backpack. If I imagine that during a nightly walk at the marina in Abu Dhabi I would first have to unscrew the adapter plate of my carrying system in order to then screw on the adapter plate of my travel tripod, it shudders at me.

I wanted to install an adapter plate on my camera, which I can then clamp in the carrying system and both tripods without having to change anything.

Which adapter plate fits both in a tripod head and in a good carrying system?

What I was looking for was a standardized adapter plate. So I searched for “Adapter plate tripod camera norm” at Google. This way I came across a standardized format called “ARCA” or “ARCA Swiss” for the first time.
I then searched for these two names at Amazon and found a suitable storage system, which uses exactly this kind of adapter plates: The “Peak Design Capture Clip v3” is a carrying system for attaching the camera to belts or rucksack straps and promises a quick mounting and dismounting of the camera.

Mount the camera on the tripod despite the carrying system adapter plate.

As a travel tripod I use the “Rollei Compact Traveler No. 1 Carbon“ because it is very compact and lightweight to stow on air travel. Due to its low weight, it is also suitable for carrying on belts or backpacks, even on longer hikes. The stability of the tripod is still sufficient for me, only with strong wind the tripod comes to its limits. Acuh in terms of arca compatibility I was lucky with the “Rollei Compact Traveler No. 1 Carbon“. Actually, I was already looking for an alternative tripod head for the travel tripod, but when I looked at this again in detail at Amazon, a feature of my tripod on the Amazon product page caught my eye. Rollei writes that the “[…]360° magnesium panorama ball head with camera quick-change plate (Arca Swiss compatible)[…] is. Bingo. At the latest now I knew that I was on the right track.

Now the question remained, how to get my big, heavy “Cullmann MAGNESIT 525M CW25“ compatible to the ARCA adapter plate. The 3-way tripod head mounted on the Cullmann was not very reliable anyway, as the screws often loosened by themselves and I would like a ball head much better because of the smaller packing dimensions. So I started looking for an ARCA compatible ball head. I came across the “Andoer TB81X Stativ Kugelkopf“ and ordered it for testing.

Even ARCA adapter plates differ from each other

After receiving the “Andoer TB81X” I noticed soberingly that the supplied adapter plate of the “Rollei Compact Traveler No. 1 Carbon“ fitted into the “Andoer TB81X“, but not the other way round. The adapter plate of the “Andoer TB81X” is not square, but slightly elongated, which is why the inclusion in the travel tripod is not possible. No problem, as long as you always carry the square adapter plate of the travel tripod on the camera. This doesn’t harm the secure hold of the camera in the tripod head.

A few days later I received my “Peak Design Capture Clip v3” and unpacked it. I attached the supplied adapter plate to my Nikon D500 and even before I tested the carrying system, I had to find out if this adapter plate really fits into all tripod heads. The result pleased me, because now it was possible for me to snap the camera into the carrying system after remaining or to set it into one of my two tripods, completely without the conversion of the adapter plate. Ingenious.
