Those who are on the way as backpackers or hikers are happy about every gram that they do not have to carry. But how do we transport a video drone like the Mavic 2 Pro without sacrificing too much storage space and weight?

There is usually no room in the backpack for large suitcases, and if there is, one would not like to sacrifice 2-3 kilos of carrying weight for the transport of a bulky drone suitcase. In addition, a large hard-shell transport case is often unnecessary, since the backpack as the outer packaging of the drone already offers enough protection.

At the very beginning I actually took a B&W hard case (Amazon Affiliate Link) in my backpack on hikes. What might still work on a one-day hike, however, quickly becomes a thorn in our side, at the latest when walking for several days. So I quickly switched to a lighter foam suitcase (Amazon Affiliate Link). It still didn’t make me really happy, because this second suitcase took too much space as well, especially if you have a complete photo equipment with you on top.

In the end I decided to pack only the drone itself and the remote control in a separate case. After all, the drone and remote control are the most fragile and expensive parts, and charging cables and batteries hardly need any protection against mechanical impact.

I therefore decided on two transport cases from Tineer (Amazon Affiliate Link). I already knew this brand because I once owned a case for the GoPro from this manufacturer. The two cases hold the drone itself and the remote control. It was important to me that the remote control fits into the case control with the sticks attached, because I really didn’t want to have to screw the sticks on again before every flight.

Whether the two cases are really waterproof, as stated by the manufacturer, I strongly doubt. But I am sure that they can withstand heavy rain and short term water jets. That’s enough protection from water for me.

Both cases have a loop with which the cases can be fastened to the straps of the backpack with the snap hook included. This is very practical if you want to take several shots in one place, but don’t want to put the drone back into the backpack every time.

I transport the batteries in the fire- and explosion-proof safe bags already mentioned, which are required for air travel anyway. These safebags protect the batteries from damage and at the same time prevent extremely high or low temperatures from damaging the battery. This is especially useful when you are travelling in cold areas and the battery would otherwise cool down too much to be used for flying without preheating.

Transport Batteries of drones safely in airplanes / hand luggage

Nobody wants to be to blame if a drone battery catches fire on the plane. Besides, it would be bad if we were forced to leave the drone or the batteries directly at the security check. In order for everything to go smoothly, there are a few things to consider.

Are drones allowed to be imported into the country of destination?

Although there are only a few countries with import bans on drones, we should ask ourselves before each journey whether we are travelling to one of these countries. If we did not deal with the import regulations or necessary registration procedures of the destination country, we would, in the worst case, transport our drones by air in accordance with the regulations, but would then have to hand them in on entry. Therefore, we should inform ourselves about the current legal situation in each country before entering the country.

Transport batteries safely in hand luggage

The transport of a drone is possible in hand luggage as well as in checked luggage. The batteries for our copters are becoming critical. Short circuits or mechanical damage can cause the batteries to catch fire or explode. To prevent this from happening unnoticed in the cargo hold of an aircraft, these batteries must be taken into the cabin. Should a fire break out there, this will be noticed more quickly than in the cargo hold and the batteries can be extinguished in a controlled manner.

The main cause of fires and incidents with batteries are short circuits. To prevent short circuits, it is recommended to protect the battery contacts against contact. This can be achieved by masking the contacts with insulating tape, or by attaching a special rubber cover for the battery. If you tape the contacts with insulating tape, you should bear in mind that the contacts have to be taped again on the way back and that the insulating tape used for the first time may not stick anymore.

I personally take another, in my opinion even safer way and pack the batteries in special bags for transport in the airplane. These bags are fire and explosion proof and also protect the contacts of the batteries from short circuits.

The bags also have another advantage: airport and security staff can tell directly from the bag that this is a professional solution. The bag therefore offers less “attack surface” than any self-adhesive tape on batteries. So I simply play it safe and avoid unpleasant discussions. Transportation is safer because of the explosion-proof fabric on top of that.

The battery capacity matters

Each airline makes its own rules about which batteries are allowed on board. So inform yourself about the current rules of the airlines immediately before the flight.

In most cases, two batteries with a capacity of up to 100 Wh per person may be taken on board without special permission.

If more than 100 Wh per battery, the batteries must be registered with most airlines. Some airlines declare batteries over 160 Wh as dangerous goods.

Secure storage for the protection of the drone

As a drone pilot you usually want to make sure that your own drone survives the flight without damage. After all, loading and unloading the hand luggage compartments can be a bit rough.

For example, I myself use two different types of cases for my Mavic 2 Pro, which differ greatly in weight and dimensions, but also in the degree of protection.

If I want to be on the safe side and have enough space in my luggage, I use my waterproof “outdoor.case” from the case specialists at B&W (Amazon Affiliate Link). This extremely durable case offers enough space for the entire Fly More Kit, a Macbook and protects the copter perfectly. But the part is not exactly light. If mobility is also important in the destination country, for example on planned hikes or even complete backpacking holidays, I avoid my big case. Instead, I choose a foam transport case, which I then store in a backpack or in a carry-on bag. Although it offers less protection for the time being, it is much lighter and more handy. The foam case has outer dimensions of 340 x 255 x 130 mm and weighs only about 1 kg.

I have been looking for a waterproof and stable case for the Mavic 2 Pro for a long time. It was important to me that the case, with all its stability and waterproofness, has quite small packing dimensions and the lowest possible dead weight, so that I can take the case in my backpack on backpacking tours.

One thing I found out: Really light and small, waterproof and dustproof transport cases for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro (Amazon Affiliate Link) are rare. So, if you put your absolute focus on the lightness of your equipment, you are better off with a pure foam case.

But since the protection of my drone was so important to me that I didn’t want to go on tour without IP67 certification and indestructible design, I had to look for the smallest and lightest case in this class.

These were specially developed for the toughest outdoor use and that’s how they look like. The case itself weighs 2 kg and offers a volume of 11.7 l with an external dimension of 330 x 235 x 150 mm. So the case fits just about into my backpack. Due to the automatic pressure equalization valve on the front side, the case can be taken along on flights without any problems. The valve is designed to let air in while keeping water out before it enters. Without this valve, there would be a risk that the case would explode or implode due to its tightness during take-off or landing.

According to the manufacturer, the materials of the case are temperature stable from -30°C to +80°C. And speaking of extreme cold: The specially developed snap locks ensure a firm closure and offer easy and quick opening of the case even with cold fingers. “Snap.”

DJI’s Mavic 2 Pro gives creative professionals every opportunity to create fantastic video footage. The Hasselblad camera with its 1-inch sensor produces razor-sharp 4K video even in low light conditions. With the right settings, we were able to make the most of the drone’s potential.

Gimbal settings

Before we get into the video-only settings of our DJI Mavic 2 Pro (Amazon Affiliate Link), we should familiarize ourselves with the gimbal settings. These settings affect how fast the gimbal pans and how abruptly the gimbal stops after a movement. Both are properties that inevitably influence the fluidity of our video recordings.

In the settings menu of the drone we go to the menu submenu of the gimbal and then to the advanced settings.
Max. Gimbal pitch speed = 3 This setting determines the maximum speed of the gimbal. This low setting ensures smooth gimbal movement even when the wheel is at maximum pitch. With higher values the camera with the wheel is hardly controllable and unattractive, hectic movements of the gimbal would be the result.
Gimbal pitch buffer = 25 This setting determines how long the gimbal will continue to run out after a movement. If the value is 0, it would stop abruptly.

Video settings of the camera

Let’s get down to business. In the video settings we store the parameters with which the videos are recorded. This is where we have the greatest leverage for high-quality video, but we can also do a lot wrong.

Make sure that we are in video mode and not photo mode and open the video settings.
Switch to “M” mode for manual control of ISO, aperture and time
ISO = 100 (if necessary bump up to about 1000, when only very little light is available, but the image noise increases dramatically.
The aperture should be adjusted according to the available light. If little light is available, the iris should be opened completely, if a lot of light is available, the iris can be closed further. But be careful from an aperture of 5 and upwards, the image quality can suffer at the edges of the image. So if you want to be on the safe side, only adjust the aperture up to a value of 5 and from then on use ND filters to regulate the incident light, see section “Tips for flying”.
Exposure time = 1/60th Here is the key, here we decide whether our video material will look like in the cinema or not.
The exposure time of 1/60 should not be changed, the reason for this is the so-called 180 degree rule. Since we will later create video material with 30 frames per second, we have to choose twice the frame rate as exposure time, and the video material created in this way will be slowed down to 80% of the original speed (we slow it down by 20%). The selection of the video size first determines the resolution of our material.
I create my videos with 4K resolution, which corresponds to a setting of 3840 x 2160 pixels.

At this point you notice that there are two settings with this resolution: HQ and FOV. Which of these settings you choose basically depends on the desired image detail and the motif.

If you choose the HQ mode, you will get a smaller section of the drone’s field of view in high quality. The picture is very sharp right into the corners.
The FOV (Full field of view) mode records a wider field of view, especially practical for large panoramas, the sharpness of the image decreases in the outer areas, especially at small aperture values.
As file format you can choose if you want to record in MP4 or MOV. The choice has no effect on the quality of your videos. If you edit the videos on a Mac, you should choose MOV, if you edit the videos on a Windows PC, you should choose MP4, because the systems can read the respective format faster, which speeds up your workflow. Apart from the speed advantage in editing, there are no limitations in choice, both Windows PCs and Macs can read both formats.
When I do the white balance, I turn off the automatic. The reason for this is that I want to avoid that the camera regulates the white balance during a recording and then the color temperatures in the video visibly change. So I ALWAYS set the white balance to 6000K. From this value, I can change the white balance in any direction later on in post production.
As style I choose “None”/”Standard”. This ensures the best possibilities for later processing.
As coding I use h.265, because only in this coding the following color profiles D-Log-M and HSL are possible.
For the color filters, I choose the D-Log-M format for 90% of my shots. This profile looks boring and colourless immediately after recording, but is best edited later. In very low light conditions, for example at dusk I use the HLG format (Hybrid Log Gamma). This achieves richer colors and less image noise in dark environments during post-processing.Attention: The use of D-Log-M or HLG leads to distortion of the video recordings, because the distortion of the lens in these recordings is not eliminated inside the drone. Therefore the lens correction is essential in the later video processing. Premiere Pro and final Cut provide these functions by default.

Tips for flying

Removing the gimbal protection

I personally remove the gimbal protection before every flight, even if some Mavic pilots leave it installed during the flight. However, the plastic protection can affect the video recordings e.g. by micro-scratches, reflections and dust.

Cleaning the camera

Sounds logical, but I often forget myself. To be on the safe side, you should clean the camera with a microfiber cloth before every flight. Better safe than sorry. Otherwise fingerprints and dust can cause unwanted light refractions or blurring, up to the failure of the autofocus.

ND filter better than high aperture values

If the surroundings are too bright, you will probably first close the aperture further so that less light falls on the sensor. Up to an aperture value of 5 this is also unproblematic. At higher aperture values, however, the image quality may suffer due to blur. What sounds paradoxical at first, is actually the case.

If you still want to reduce the light entering the sensor, you can do so with ND filters for the Mavic 2 Pro. For example, those who want to film a Greek beach in the Mediterranean midday sun will hardly be able to avoid the use of ND-filters without having overexposed large parts of the image.

There are different offers for ND filters, I myself have chosen the original filters from DJI. I have not tried any third party products before, but trusted the original filters right away. I didn’t want to take the risk that the image quality would be impaired with inferior filters. That’s not to say that there are not possibly cheaper and good alternatives, I just didn’t have time to try them out. So the laziness won with me. On the other hand I don’t buy such an expensive drone to save on essential parts and take a risk with filters.

Tips for post-processing

As mentioned before, it is important to note that our created video material is slowed down in post-production and only plays back at 80% of the original speed. This ensures a cinematic experience of our pictures.

The use of D-Log-M or HLG leads to distortion of the video footage, because the distortion of the lens is not eliminated inside the drone during these recordings. Therefore, lens correction is essential in the later video processing. Premiere Pro and Final Cut provide these functions by default.

I myself have been rendering all my videos with Final Cut Pro for years. For color grading, especially when shooting in D-Log video formats, I use the plugin Epicolor from Lemke Software.

It is one of the best plugins for color grading and helps you to make the video material look like what you have recorded with the human eye.

On 01.07.2020 the new EU drone regulation will come into force. According to current information, drones with a take-off weight of more than 900g require a drone driver’s license. Looking at the technical data of the Mavic 2 Pro with its 907g weight, it seems at first glance as if the new driving license for this drone is being prepared. But with a simple trick, the Mavic 2 Pro falls down to the 900g weight limit.

Consider take-off weight of 900g

Whoever detaches the transparent camera gimbal protection before flight saves 13g of weight. I personally remove this protection before every flight anyway, because the protection has no advantages, rather even disadvantages for the image quality of the camera.

Drone landing site

At first I didn’t understand why you needed a landing site for the drone. After all, I thought I could take off and land on any flat surface. That’s only half true, because at the latest in high grass, deep leaves, snow or sand you’ll have problems. Loose ground is whirled up, soiling the drone and camera, propellers get stuck in grass and leaves. For this reason alone a drone landing pad makes sense. Many drones, including the DJI Mavic 2 Pro or the Fimi X8 SE, also use optical sensors to detect the landing site and then use this for the precise automatic landing approach.

I decided to use a foldable landing pad with a diameter of 110 cm. This sounds very big at first, but with moderate wind I was already glad to have decided for the large version. The landing is much easier than if you only had 50 cm space.

Which SD memory card is suitable for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone?

The SD card used in the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone must be fast enough to record 4K video. In addition, the memory card must not be larger than 128GB. Here I write about my experiences and a recommendation.

On the DJI pages, a memory card recommendation is hidden in the small print of the technical details:

I myself have been using the memory cards of the SanDisk Extreme Pro V30 (Amazon Affiliate Link) series in various drones with 64GB and 128GB each (approx. 40 flying hours on Fimi X8 SE (Amazon Affiliate Link) and DJI Mavic 2 Pro (Amazon Affiliate Link)) for ages.

I never had problems with this card. The card works reliably. Especially the transfer of video files from the SD card to the computer is fast, because the card has not only an enormously high writing speed, but also a high reading speed.
