Anyone who has ever tried to fly a drone at temperatures around -10 degrees or to operate the camera for a longer period of time will have noticed that the cold can hurt the fingertips terribly and that the fun of the hobby is quickly lost. Normal gloves are usually too thick and imprecise for such delicate controls as cameras or remote controls. Special photographic gloves provide a remedy.

The EU drone ID card must be carried either printed out on paper, electronically on a smartphone or in credit card format. An Amazon retailer now enables printing the ID on plastic card via online configurator.

At the retailer “Kartenstudio” (Amazon Affiliate Link) you can easily upload your drone ID as JPEG or PNG. You will then receive a preview and can position or scale the drone ID card differently. From 2021, new laws for drones will apply in the EU. Here is what should interest most DJI Mavic pilots with links to registration, training and online exams.

Short basics

Your drone weighs more than 250g or has a camera? Then you have to register as a pilot at the Luftfahrtbundesamt. In addition, you must take an online test at the Luftfahrtbundesamt.

Without a test, only drones with less than 250g take-off weight and without sensors such as cameras may be flown.

1. Register as a pilot

You can register as a pilot at the Luftfahrtbundesamt under the following link:

With the login created there, you can also access the online trainings and online exams later. When registering, you must enter master data about the operator, i.e. address and personal data for private individuals or address data if you are registering as a company.

To verify the data you have to upload a copy or a photo of your identity card or passport, or in case of a company a document such as the business registration.

In addition, the existing liability insurance of your drone with insurer and policy number must be specified.

After manual verification of the registration, the drone pilot is then provided with a remote pilot ID and a license plate for the drone (UAS operator number (e-ID)), which must be affixed to the drone from now on.

Drone Landing Pad

At first I didn’t understand why you need a landing pad for the drone. After all, I thought, I could take off and land on all flat surfaces. That’s only half true, because you’ll have problems in tall grass, deep leaves, snow or sand at the latest. Loose soil is stirred up, soiling the drone and camera, propellers get stuck in grass and leaves. For this reason alone, a drone landing pad makes sense. Many drones, including the DJI Mavic 2 Pro or the Fimi X8 SE, additionally detect the landing site with optical sensors and then use this for the precise automatic landing approach.

I decided on a foldable landing pad with a diameter of 110 cm (Amazon Afiliate Link). That sounds very big at first, but with moderate wind I was already glad to have decided for the large variant. The landing is much easier than if you had only 50 cm space.

Nobody wants to be to blame if a drone battery catches fire on the plane. Besides, it would be bad if we were forced to leave the drone or the batteries directly at the security check. In order for everything to go smoothly, there are a few things to consider.

Are drones allowed to be imported into the country of destination?

Although there are only a few countries with import bans on drones, we should ask ourselves before each journey whether we are travelling to one of these countries. If we did not deal with the import regulations or necessary registration procedures of the destination country, we would, in the worst case, transport our drones by air in accordance with the regulations, but would then have to hand them in on entry. Therefore, we should inform ourselves about the current legal situation in each country before entering the country.

Transport batteries safely in hand luggage

The transport of a drone is possible in hand luggage as well as in checked luggage. The batteries for our copters are becoming critical. Short circuits or mechanical damage can cause the batteries to catch fire or explode. To prevent this from happening unnoticed in the cargo hold of an aircraft, these batteries must be taken into the cabin. Should a fire break out there, this will be noticed more quickly than in the cargo hold and the batteries can be extinguished in a controlled manner.

The main cause of fires and incidents with batteries are short circuits. To prevent short circuits, it is recommended to protect the battery contacts against contact. This can be achieved by masking the contacts with insulating tape, or by attaching a special rubber cover for the battery. If you tape the contacts with insulating tape, you should bear in mind that the contacts have to be taped again on the way back and that the insulating tape used for the first time may not stick anymore.

I personally take another, in my opinion even safer way and pack the batteries in special bags for transport in the airplane. These bags are fire and explosion proof and also protect the contacts of the batteries from short circuits.

The bags also have another advantage: airport and security staff can tell directly from the bag that this is a professional solution. The bag therefore offers less “attack surface” than any self-adhesive tape on batteries. So I simply play it safe and avoid unpleasant discussions. Transportation is safer because of the explosion-proof fabric on top of that.

The battery capacity matters

Each airline makes its own rules about which batteries are allowed on board. So inform yourself about the current rules of the airlines immediately before the flight.

In most cases, two batteries with a capacity of up to 100 Wh per person may be taken on board without special permission.

If more than 100 Wh per battery, the batteries must be registered with most airlines. Some airlines declare batteries over 160 Wh as dangerous goods.

Secure storage for the protection of the drone

As a drone pilot you usually want to make sure that your own drone survives the flight without damage. After all, loading and unloading the hand luggage compartments can be a bit rough.

For example, I myself use two different types of cases for my Mavic 2 Pro, which differ greatly in weight and dimensions, but also in the degree of protection.

If I want to be on the safe side and have enough space in my luggage, I use my waterproof “outdoor.case” from the case specialists at B&W (Amazon Affiliate Link). This extremely durable case offers enough space for the entire Fly More Kit, a Macbook and protects the copter perfectly. But the part is not exactly light. The case itself weighs 2 kg and offers a volume of 11.7l with an external dimension of 330 x 235 x 150 mm.

If mobility is also important in the destination country, for example on planned hikes or even complete backpacking holidays, I avoid my big case. Instead, I choose a foam transport case, which I then store in a backpack or in a carry-on bag. Although it offers less protection for the time being, it is much lighter and more handy. The foam case has outer dimensions of 340 x 255 x 130 mm and weighs only about 1 kg.

What do you need a drone pad for?

A lot of drone pilots wonder if you really need a drone landing site. Why take off from a landing pad and not directly from the ground? Is a drone pad just a gimmick or a real must-have?

Practical helper on uneven ground, snow, sand and meadows

Of course, a drone can also be launched directly from the ground, for example from a parking lot or the mown, short lawn.

But if you want to launch the drone from high grass, loose leaves, sandy soils or snow, you will notice what a drone landing site makes sense for. Whirled snow, sand or loose leaves get into the propellers and long grasses and uneven ground make landing difficult. Those who want to take off and land safely in such adverse environments can either use a large cardboard or sit on a compact folding drone landing pad.

In addition, the landing pad can be optically recognized by various drones and can be used for the precise, automatic landing approach. A camera built into the drone detects the landing site and the drone lands specifically on this surface.

A drone landing site is therefore not just a toy, but offers great added value for the drone pilot.

Different sizes – which drone pad is right for my drone?

Foldable drone landing sites are available in different sizes, from 55cm, 75cm or 110cm diameter. At first glance, 110cm diameters look very large and some would intuitively prefer a smaller model, but I can only strongly recommend the large drone landing site. 55cm or 75cm in diameter are quite small, considering that the most common drones already have a diameter of about 40cm. If there is even more wind, the landing approach on the small landing pads becomes millimeter work.

The 5€ surcharge for the biggest variant is well invested money. Since the drone landing pad can be folded to save space, you won’t lose much more space than for the smaller variants.

After a long shipping process I finally held her in my hands at the beginning of August: My Fimi X8 SE drone. About one month after the first flight I already gained some experience and bought some accessories. In this list I present my favorite accessories for consumer drones.

Carrying case

My Fimi X8 SE (Amazon Affiliate Link) was delivered in a very neat and pretty cardboard box, but I wouldn’t take the small drone with me on longer trips. Too big would be the danger that the drone would be damaged in cargo or luggage compartments. However, the manufacturer HSKB sells tailor-made cases with suitably cut out interiors for various makes of drone at Amazon. This is also the case for the Fimi X8 SE (Amazon Affiliate Link).

SD-Card

When it comes to SD cards, I’ve relied on SanDisk’s Extreme PRO series of fast cards for years. I’ve always used them in SLRs and actioncams. Since most drones record in 4K with at least 30fps, you also need a fast memory card. Slower memory cards won’t fit the data dimensions and your video will jerk or the recording will be completely interrupted.

If you want to fly a drone like the DJI Mavic Pro or the Fimi X8 SE (Amazon Affiliate Link) in Germany, you have to attach a small sign with the name and address of the pilot.
